Pizza on the Braai

Kids love pizza at any time – but freshly made pizza with lots of gooey cheese at your campsite? That’s special!

This quick and easy method for making pizza will keep the whole family happy, whether it’s for lunch, as a snack before dinner, or even as dinner itself.

I bought two fresh pizzas from the local supermarket – these were of different, yet complementary, flavours. My freezer is just too small to store frozen pizzas, but you can absolutely use frozen ones! Just see the tips below for a few tweaks to ensure a delicious result. 😊

Open the packets and slide one pizza onto a braai grid, then place the other face-down on top – essentially making a sandwich with the fillings inside.

Close the braai grid and place it over medium coals, turning it often. The goal is to warm the centre and melt the cheese while the bases cook through to a lovely golden colour. You’ll know it’s ready when you see cheese bubbling out of the sides.

Once ready, simply slide onto a cutting board, slice as needed and dig in!  You’ll be very popular with everyone 😊

Making from FROZEN pizza bases….

  • Let the bases thaw out somewhat – they should be easy to handle – not stiff and hard.
  • Add extra toppings, especially cheese to help “glue” everything together and raise the flavours
  • Cook and serve as described above.

HANDY HINTS!

  1. Use two different, yet complementary, flavours of pizza for variety.
  2. Try plain pizza bases and add your own ingredients to the centre.
  3. Use small plain pizza bases and let everyone create their own – pineapple, anyone?
  4. A long-bladed knife works best for slicing the pizza.
