Campside Chocolate Sauce

This versatile, quick, and easy chocolate sauce can be made on a braai, gas, or electric stove. It’s perfect for overland adventures, as you can omit fresh ingredients and rely on tinned and packaged items instead.

Pour a tin of condensed milk into a pot and add a generous knob of butter or margarine (optional if you don’t have any) along with 100g of dark chocolate broken into squares. Add a heaped teaspoon of coffee granules.

Place the pot over a low to medium heat and stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted and everything has combined into a smooth, glossy sauce. The sauce is quite thick and serves up to 6, but you can extend it by adding cream, milk or plain yoghurt. If you don’t have fresh, use tinned cream or make up some milk using a coffee creamer such as Cremora or powdered milk.

Serve over ice cream, pancakes, braai’d bananas, or anything that needs a touch of chocolate magic.

HANDY HINTS!

  1. Suitable for making on: BRAAI / GAS / ELECTRIC
  2. This chocolate sauce isn’t overly sweet—the dark chocolate and coffee help balance the sugary taste of the condensed milk.
  3. If needed, add cream, plain yoghurt, or milk to thin the sauce – use tinned or powdered substitutes if you don’t have fresh.
  4. Any leftovers (if there are any!) can be stored for later. If you haven’t used fresh ingredients like butter, margarine, cream, or yoghurt, refrigeration isn’t necessary.
