CHECKLISTS

A checklist may seem like “just another piece of paper” and an unnecessary chore, but when you can’t level your van because you forgot the levelers behind the shed, you’ll be wishing you took that 5 minutes to go through a checklist (experience talking here 😊)

Checklists take the second-guessing out of packing – of course no two people will use identical checklists – you may be traveling with children or pets, a trailer or a caravan – any base checklist you start with needs to be tweaked and adapted to your specific needs.

The other benefit to a checklist is that it helps with organising and storage – if your list is very long and your storage space is very small, you know you need to re-look at what you’re taking.

Also, bear in mind your packing strategy – you don’t want to have to unload the entire car to get out the air compressor because you have a flat – things you might need on the road should be easily accessible while you’re on the road.  Once you get to your destination, they come out first and can get packed out of the way.

Essentials

There a few absolutely – and not always obvious – essentials to have in your car when embarking on a road trip. The best example being cash – you need to have enough cash to cover toll fees in the event there is a problem with the credit card system or if the E-Tag system goes down and enough for some fuel. Load shedding is a reality that affects cell towers – the fuel station may not be able to accept cards when the towers are not working. Double and then treble check you have your Driver’s Licence.

The Vehicle Checklist

The basics of what you need for your vehicle – remember that when travelling to other countries you may need more than just car papers, but reflective stickers, vests etc.  Part of “happy camping” is having done your homework before you leave.

The Van/Trailer Checklist

As this App looks to cater for people utilising a car and a tent, a caravan, motorhome, campervan or trailer, one checklist cannot satisfy all those different options – we offer some of the basics, but you will need to tweak, add and delete to suit your particular situation. There is a separate list for off-grid 4x4 adventurers.

Household Checklist

A list of the day to day basic items – again, tweak to your needs – if you’re strictly on a keto diet, ditch the toaster.  If you’re going entirely off-grid, ditch the toaster and pack a grid to make toast on the fire.

Entertainment Checklist

Sometimes the rain or the cold interfere with us having a great day in the outdoors – make a list of what to pack for those days that suits your interests.

Setting Up & Breaking Down Checklist

This is the basic checklist we use for our campervan – you will have a different procedure depending on your type of vehicle.

And a last thought…

WEIGHT! Everything you’ve laid out to pack, everything you’ve squeezed into a space has the consequence of adding weight – weight impairs the performance of your car and adds to the fuel consumption. Try pack light and don’t pack “just in case I might want that” – pack what you know you need.

Homologation of a self build Campervan

HOMOLOGATION OF A SELF-BUILD CAMPERVAN

Any panel van that is converted into a campervan needs to be registered with NATIS as a Self-Propelled Caravan through the offices of NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications).

The process involves a bit of running around, quite a bit of paperwork and an inspection.

Download the document below - ALA.  The documents include the application form and the ALA document details the entire procedure.  As a quick overview…

You will need:

  • Copy of applicant’s ID document, and a letter of Proxy in the case of a company or organization.
  • Affidavit for built-up vehicle - including engine and VIN (chassis) numbers, and full details of the work carried out and type and source of major and especially safety critical components. This must be stamped and signed off by a member of the South African Police Services.
  • Request for Police identification – RPI – or Police Clearance. Take originals and copies of your vehicle papers and ID to the licencing department – they will prepare a 2 page document which you take to the Police Clearance yard – they will check your VIN & engine numbers and microdots. It helps if you know where to find your VIN & engine numbers.  Once the Police have signed and stamped your RPC document you send this to NRCS – you do not need to return to the Licencing Department at this stage.
  • Road Worthy Certificate – and Inspection Report from the RWC test station – must be in date at the time of application. Get this last – if there is a delay with any of your other paperwork, it may expire and then you have to get another one. Also, ensure that the Inspector changes your classification on the NATIS system to “caravan”.
  • Weigh Bridge Certificate & Affidavit from the testing station.
  • On trailers above 750 kg and all heavy vehicles a static or dynamic Brake Report must be submitted together with the application. The NRCS will advise the applicant if a dynamic test is required, consisting of the following:
    a) Braking capability per wheel
    b) Difference per wheel
    c) Speed of roller
  • At least two (3) photographs of vehicle showing the full rear, side and front views.
  • Photograph of the data plate on the vehicle – this is not listed on the paperwork, but they will ask for it.
  • Proof of Payment of R1800.

Email all the documents to the NRCS.  They will contact you in time to arrange for a visual inspection of the vehicle.  Once done and approved, they will either courier you the documents or you can arrange to collect them (courier service is at a fee).  Then it’s off to your Licencing Authority armed with all your paperwork to get your new disc 😊

Should you require an annual roadworthy or two license discs for your panel van, you are not exempt from these requirements while your application is in process.

On The Road

Having a reminder list – especially when breaking-down – is really useful.  A fellow camper comes over to chat and you forget where you are in your mental list of tasks to do, and suddenly you’re driving off with the stabilisers still down or still plugged into shore power.  Everyone’s situation is unique – here is a quick list to get you started on your personal set-up and break-down lists.
