    REVIEW OF Karridene Caravan Park

    Illovo Beach, KZN South Coast

2 Bearz ???????? and a Storm ????, our 97 Sprite Storm, had the opportunity to camp at Karridene Caravan Park near Winkelspruit on weekend of the 26th to the 29th January 2024.

Upon arrival you get to security, whom scan your Driver’s License and car licence disc. You can then proceed direct to your site if you have pre-booked. We had not and parked behind security and walked to reception to book and pay.

They allocated us site 30 as it has shade but were told as they were not busy we could just choose a site and inform them which one we were on. In the end we choose site 31 as it still had shade but a little more level.

We choose another warm day in KZN yes some 29°C to arrive and set up camp. Soon after setting up we had to go and take a swim. Nice and cool the water was. The caravan park has its own pool.

Considering the wind that was howling on Friday when we arrived the park is relatively protected from the costal winds.

All the sites are grassed with trees dotted here and there. Yes there is a lack of shade in the park during the hot KZN summers but enough if you out of season and they not busy. Should be very nice in the cooler months. There is a tap shared between each 4 sites. Electricity is supplied with both Blue plugs and standard 3 pin plugs. Each site also has a dustbin and there are a few movable braais around.
There are 3 ablution blocks in the park so you are never far from one. Block A is also wheel chair friendly with a wheelchair toilet and shower. They have plenty hot water and great water pressure. Each block also has a scullery area, ironing, laundry sinks and wash lines. Laundry facilities are available at the hotel.
There is generator backup power throughout when the power goes out but aware the generator is noisy and may keep some campers awake at night. However since they run off eThekwini Power loadshedding (Area 16A on ESP) is minimal and only off for a 2 hours a day (Occasionally 4hrs) even in stage 4. Yes that’s all they get. They are still getting a dispensation on loadshedding from the floods 3 years ago.

You have full use of all the hotel facilities so there is lots to offer you and the kids. Putt-Putt, Games Room, Squash Court, Volley Ball Court, Spa, Playground, Hotel Pool and kids pool, Restaurant and Bar.
You can take a walk to the beach through the gate and down the walkway (Also Wheelchair friendly) to an amazing beach.
There is a Kiosk on site situated at the Hotel Pool for all your very basic needs, Wood, Ice, chips and Chocolates.
The Winkelspruit Spar is just a short 4km drive for those who need more.

There is also a lot to do close by. The Illovo Nursery is a must visit but some may wish to leave the wallet at home when you get to the Flea Market section that is there on weekends.

Over all a very pleasant visit and will go back again. Especially if one considers the price.
