    REVIEW OF Marlon Holiday Resort

    Sunwich Port, KZN South Coast

Two Bearz ???? ???? and a Skulpie ????, our 1995 Sprite Sprint, had the opportunity to go camping at Marlon Holiday Resort from 22 to 25 September 2023.

Situated on the banks of the Domba River is a paradise of tranquillity. Lush green grass rolls from your site down to the banks of the Domba River. Birdlife is abundant and will keep the twitcher in you happy for hours. Palm trees and an assortment of other indigenous trees line either side of your site. This gives you privacy from your neighbours and supplies much needed shade in the summer heat. While we welcome the shade they are also offer great protection against the coastal winds which can be very harsh at times.

The park is bordered by the river on one side and a small ambling stream on the other. To cross the stream you walk over a small wooden bridge through the neatly kept garden. You emerge at the entertainment side of this wonderful holiday resort. A large blue pool set among the trees is there to greet you as you lounge the day away on the grass or on the lounge chairs. There is a games room above the pool with Table Tennis, Pool Table and Darts and much more for the more energetic of us. Just over the small walkway leading past the pool to the reception is a myriad of things to keep the kids busy. Far enough away from the sites to not be heard by those down there but close enough. They can spend the day on Swings, Jungle Gyms, Trampoline, Skateboard ½ pipe before returning home to the folks all tuckered out.

Below the pool nestled alongside the stream is The Shack. It is only open Friday nights for the residents and campers. Chris the owner will cook up fish or calamari for you or a combo if you wish. No need to rush to make supper on the Friday evening of your arrival. Come and enjoy supper at The Shack and meet the rest of your weekend campers. A TV is set up at The Shack for special sports events for those who wish to view. However noise is kept to the minimum so as not to disturb anyone.

For those who enjoy a bit of fishing we believe the river offers an opportunity or one could take a 400m paddle down the river to the mouth and fish in the ocean. Return in the late afternoon with your ocean catch. Then you can braai your catch in the evening and enjoy the fruits of your hunting with patats and sides.

If one is inclined to venture to the beach it is just a short 700m walk to Sunwich Port beach which offers a tidal pool and a restaurant / pub. For those wanting a Blue Flag beach Southport beach is a mere 3km drive and also offers a tidal pool and restaurant / pub.

Rose Walker, Chris Walker and his Wife Heather are wonderful park owners. They made us feel very welcome and will do almost anything to make your stay a most memorable one.

Now down to the other nitty gritty parts of the sites and ablutions.

The parks consists of 48 well-appointed sites. All sites are level so no need for those levelling blocks you brought with. You have a choice of grassed or grassed sites with the exception of those right up against the river which have a bit of sand. Sun or Shade the choice is yours but every site has a shady bit. Each site has a 220V electrical connection point with Standard SA 3 pin connection. All water taps are in close vicinity and stands are well marked and designated. The park uses borehole water which is potable. Since they use a borehole they are not affected by the constant water issues of the local municipality.

There is one main large well-appointed ablution block for the resort with ample toilets, showers and basins all kept wonderfully clean. Showers are nice and big with enough space to dry off and change all the while keeping floor dry. Shower heads give a nice spray and the water pressure is great. There was always lots of hot water. There are also 2 family bathrooms (The old ablution block) and each has a shower, basin, bath and toilet. Between the family and other ablution is the Porta Potti station, Scullery, Laundry Room with coin operated washing machines, tumble dryers and plenty of washing lines.

For those not wanting to camp the park offers 6 self-catering cabins of various sizes.

The park is fully fenced and has remote control access. Day visitors are allowed but only to visit other campers and a small fee is required.

The road to the park once turning off the R102 is in fair condition. There are a few potholes but then where in our beautiful country is there not.

As you turn off the R102 to the park there is a small shopping complex with a Superette for all your needs. A water shop, Bottle Store, Car Wash (Not sure if they will wash your caravan / trailer), Hardware Store and a Deli.

We loved what we found at this little oasis on the KZN South Coast. We will most certainly be back to experience more.
