    REVIEW OF Mtwalume Holiday Resort

Two Bearz ???? ???? and a Skulpie ????, our 1995 Sprite Sprint, had the opportunity to go camping at Mtwalume Holiday Resort over the weekend of 2 to 5 November 2023 for a quick getaway.

Situated above the sleepy coastal holiday town of Mtwalume just 10km north of Hibberdene is this fairly unknown holiday resort. It is high up on the ridge. Although there are no sea views you have a majestic view inland over the lush green sugar cane fields and natal bush. From here you will see kites, harriers and eagles soaring up high. The park has quite an abundance of bird life.

The resort borders onto the N2 on the one side. Although there is a bit of traffic noise we soon got used to it and it no longer bothered us.

There is a play park for the kiddies with plenty of jungle gyms and slides as well as a trampoline.

Down a few stairs you will find a small restaurant as well as a sparkling blue salt pool. The waterfall into the pool is a hit with the kids especially in the summer months. Took a quick dip in the pool but one dive into the deep end and out the other side was sufficient. It far to cold for these two bearz.

If one is inclined to walk to the beach it is just a 700m down the hill. We choose to drive as we were not going to walk back up the hill. The beach which offers a tidal pool and endless sand beaches. We are told that fishing off the rocks to the north of the tidal pool is very popular.

Now down to the other nitty gritty parts of the sites and ablutions.

The park has 18 level sites. Each has their own brick braai and braai grid, tap and dustbin. The sites are well demarcated. Some are full sun while others are surrounded by trees. Thus some are full grass and others have some sand patches. Each site has a 200V 10A connection. They use the standard 3pin connection. Some sites are relatively small so check your caravan size with reception on booking and some are tent only stands.

There is one ablution block for the resort with toilets, showers and basins all kept wonderfully clean. There is a bath in the ladies. Shower heads give a nice spray and the water pressure is great. The resort has a borehole and backup tanks for when the municipality cannot supply. However loadshedding does affect the distribution of water if they are using the tanks. There was always lots of hot water. Just outside the ablutions is the dish washing area.

We were added to the resorts WhatsApp group while we were there and were kept up to date about the loadshedding and water situation.

There is ample lighting around the park, maybe a little too much for our liking. This is not affected by loadshedding as they are battery operated with solar chargers.

The park is fully fenced with an electric fence and has remote control access. There is also a security guard at the gate as well as a roaming guard at night. Day visitors are allowed but only to visit other campers and a small fee is required.

We had good cellphone and internet reception with 4G on both MTN and Telkom.

The road to the park once turning off the N2 is in good condition.

We loved what we found at another this little oasis on the KZN South Coast. We will most certainly be back to experience more.

For those not wanting to camp the park offers self-catering cabins of various sizes.
