Pan-fried Sarmies

Want to whip up a quick, tasty meal without the hassle of starting a braai? Pan-fried sarmies are the perfect solution! 😊 Cook them in a pan on a gas, electric, or induction hob — no fancy gadgets required.

On this occasion, I had some leftover chicken, which I mixed with mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce, and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper. Butter (or margarine) the outside of the bread slices, then place them in a frying pan over medium heat.

Allow a couple of minutes for the bread to crisp up and turn golden before flipping it to cook the other side. If the heat is too high, the bread may brown or burn before the filling warms through. On the other hand, if the heat is too low, it won’t become crispy and toasted.

Slide onto a plate, cut and serve for lunch or a snack at any time!

HANDY HINTS!

  1. Season your sandwich with salt and pepper to taste before cooking.
  2. Grated cheese stretches a lot further than sliced block cheese and melts quicker.
  3. Use a stronger-flavoured cheese to get that delicious cheesy taste without having to pile it on.
  4. Try mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce, barbecue sauce or chutney to drive up the flavours!
  5. Have a fridge raid and make sandwiches with whatever you have—steak and onion, steak, cheese, and onion, leftover braai wors with onion chutney, chicken and mayo, bacon and cheese… let your imagination and taste buds run wild!
  6. No fancy kitchen gadgets needed – just a frying pan. Suitable for cooking on gas, an induction plate or electric stove top.
